Fire destroys historic philmont church
Posted: Jan-16-2013
Fire has consumed a historic church in the Village of Philmont. Calls started coming into the 911 center at approximately 6:25 pm. Philmont Fire, Mellenville Fire, and Greenport Rescue Squad were all dispatched on the First Alarm. The first arriving chief confirmed a working fire and quickly ordered multiple mutual aid assignments, including the Claverack Task Force (Philmont, Mellenville, Claverack, Churchtown & West Ghent), Greenport with their FAST Team and Hudson with Tower 32. Several additional companies and resources, were summoned as well before the fire was brought under control. Despite the hard work and determination of over 100 firefighters, the fire was just too far advanced and the church was lost. Our sincere thanks to all who responded and fought to save this community treasure. Our thoughts are with the parishioners and the greater Philmont community.
